About Homelesness: Anyone can be at risk of losing one of the most basic essentials of life - a home.

Homelessness is a social dilemma that can affect anyone regardless of age, gender, ethnicity or social status. Despite popular belief, homeless individuals do not necessarily suffer from mental illness, drug or alcohol abuse. They are not homeless because they are lazy, socially inept or want to live on the street.

The reasons for homelessness are varied and sometimes associated with mental illness or social circumstances. But often enough, homelessness is caused by the high cost of living and lack of affordable housing associated with fast growing communities.

In York Region, less than 2% are chronically homeless but more than 500 people are homeless at any given time. Many people in York Region find themselves temporarily homeless or close to homelessness because of situations beyond their control such as losing a job, illness, domestic violence or relationship breakdowns.

While the problem of homelessness grows in York Region, temporary and emergency homeless shelters continually find themselves over capacity.
